A son of the Guatemalan Marta Julia Lorenzana, extradited to the United States in 2021 for drug trafficking, was shot dead this Wednesday along with two other men in a town in eastern Guatemala.
According to the National Civil Police (PNC), the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at an alcoholic beverage store in the municipality of Huité, in the eastern department of Zacapa, some 150 kilometers east of Guatemala City.
The victim was identified as Hans Broiner Lemus Lorenzana, a member of the Lorenzana clan dedicated to drug trafficking, whose boss, Waldermar, died in March of last year in the United States, where he was serving a prison sentence of more than 23 years for said crime.
The other two deceased in the armed act have not been identified by the authorities and were allegedly bodyguards of the grandson of the so-called “El Patriarca”, who was at the head of a group that trafficked drugs to the United States along with his children, all arrested. and extradited to the northern country.
The daughter of the deceased drug trafficker, Marta Julia Lorenzana, was extradited last December along with her brother Haroldo Lorenzana to be tried for drug trafficking.
The Lorenzana clan, according to investigations carried out by the US justice system, had links with the Mexican Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is serving a life sentence in the United States.
So far, the authorities have not revealed details of the motive for the crime of Lemus Lorenzana, alias “El Broy”, 26 years old.
According to official records, on June 18, 2013, the grandson of “El Patriarca” was captured along with five other people in the southwestern department of San Marcos, bordering Mexico.
However, the young man regained his freedom through house arrest but without surveillance by the National Civil Police.
According to the same Police, together with members of the Public Ministry (MP-Prosecutor’s Office), they began investigations on Wednesday to establish the motive for the triple murder.
The Central American country is one of the 15 most violent in the world, according to international organizations and during 2021 it recorded a total of 4,078 murders, 16.5% more than the 3,500 reported in 2020.
