Mexico registered 82 kidnappings in August, 5.7% less than the 87 in the previous month, the organization Alto al Secuestro reported on Monday.
“Decrease of 5.7% in investigation files initiated by the crime of kidnapping. In August there are 82 files registered, compared to 87 in July,” the NGO said in a bulletin.
In addition, there was a 13.7% drop in the number of kidnapping victims, from 124 people in June to 107 in July.
Likewise, there was an increase of 32.3% in the number of detainees related to the crime of kidnapping, due to the fact that in August 135 people were arrested for this crime while in July 102 alleged perpetrators were arrested.
The states with the highest incidence of this crime were the State of Mexico, with 13 cases; followed by Veracruz, with eight cases, and Hidalgo, Chihuahua, and Baja California, each with five cases of kidnapping.
In contrast, there were eight states that did not register any kidnappings in August: Baja California Sur, Campeche, Coahuila, Durango, Nayarit, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Yucatán.
According to Stop the Kidnapping, since the beginning of the Presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in December 2018, Mexico has counted 3,903 kidnappings, a figure 39.7% lower than the 6,479 kidnappings that took place in the same term of his mandate. predecessor, Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
In this first stage of López Obrador’s mandate, there have been 5,072 kidnapping victims.
Mexico has recorded the two most violent years in its history in the first part of the López Obrador government with 34,682 murder victims in 2019 and 34,557 in 2020.
