STYLE – In celebration of the 170th birthday of the department store, the artistic director of the store, Frédéric Bones, and the director of the store, Juliette Colin, will stage an immersive drama on the second floor of the store two evenings per week.
Unexplainable occurrences are going down at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche. It is reported that at night, the 2e stage is haunted by the specter of a young woman who used to perform there. She had been stabbed in 1862, and she was sentenced to spend her life aimlessly roaming the aisles of stores until her killer was identified… At the Ladies’ Happiness is an immersive drama that is freely altered from Émile Zola’s masterpiece and is performed every Friday and Saturday after the venue closes. Approximately thirty comedians take part in the production. It should come as no surprise that the story of Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut, the company’s founders, served as motivation for the author of girl and of Germinal.
To commemorate the 170th birthday of the department store, the initial concept for this celebration was conceived by Frédéric Bodenes, artistic director of the BM. Juliette Colin, of the Crumble Production troupe, was in charge of directing the event. According to Frédéric Bones, “I went to a performance of Sleep No More, the legendary New York production, which is credited with inventing this new kind of theatre, about 10 years ago. I can freely admit that I did not comprehend very much at the time, but despite this, I thought the experience to be fantastic.
