After the European evening in Marseille, a German supporter had to be brought to the Timone hospital for treatment.
According to the most recent information from the prefecture of the Bouches-du-Rhône and the sailors-firefighters, one German supporter was injured and 17 individuals were arrested on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Champions League match under close surveillance that saw OM lose to Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0). A thousand gendarmes and police officers were on hand in the second-largest city in France to keep an eye on a gathering that was thought to be potentially dangerous. On Thursday, some German supporters of FC Cologne engaged in violent skirmishes with French supporters in the stadium in Nice. The French supporters were present.

According to the headquarters of the Marseille police department, a smoke bomb fire in the stands caused an injury to a German fan while the game was being played in Marseille. The firefighters said that he was taken to the hospital in La Timone. “He was carried there.” According to a source who is familiar with the situation and spoke with AFP, he has “very critical injuries.” According to the prefecture, three members of the security forces were also hurt in the incident.

In the evening, fourteen persons were detained close to the stadium on suspicion of trying to bring smoke bombs inside the venue. Among those seized were three German fans. Depending on the prefecture, the remaining arrests involve the use of lasers, the introduction of a weapon (a knife), the launching of projectiles, violence against persons holding public authority positions, intentional violence, and the hurling of projectiles.

Nazi salutes
Earlier on in the afternoon, three further people were taken into custody; two of them were charged with throwing projectiles, and the third was arrested for showing contempt for a person in a position of public authority. Inside the stadium, German supporters were seen doing Nazi salutes in the visitors’ section, according to the prefecture of police, who also specified that a report had been filed with UEFA by the prefecture of police.

According to the prefecture, “Thanks to the preparation that took place a significant amount of time in advance, the cooperation and conversation with all of the participants, and a reinforced and responsive police force (…), both the day and the meeting took place without major incident.” As of Monday evening, supporters of both Germany and Marseille were attempting to confront one another in the central business district of the city, and a fight broke out between approximately twenty of them towards the conclusion of the day. According to the prefecture’s report, a total of eight people had been detained, one of them German. The majority of those detained were accused of carrying a weapon or showing disdain for a person depositary of public authority.
