Archetypes, Meghan Markle’s long-awaited podcast, has finally debuted, and the pilot episode features an interview with Serena Williams in which the two discuss the word “ambitious.”
During the conversation, Meghan shared her insight, which was subsequently reported by People: “I don’t remember ever personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ‘ambitious’ until I started dating my now-husband.” “Some people believe that ambition is the worst possible trait for a woman to have, and that it should be discouraged at all costs. Um. Because of this, it is very difficult for me to avoid feeling the negative that is associated with it now that I have experienced it. I can’t unsee that either, in the millions of young girls and women who routinely make themselves appear much smaller than they are.”
Megan also disclosed that she had written a letter to Hillary Clinton over a Procter & Gamble advertisement for dish soap that was only shown to women. Megan was upset because the commercial targeted only women. The company ultimately decided to alter the advertisement, and Megan described the whole thing as an “interesting” one “awakening to the millions of ways, both large and small, in which our culture attempts to confine women, to hold women back, and to tell them who and what they should and may be. I have never let myself get disconnected from that fact, and over the past few years, the urge to do action in response to it has only intensified. My 11-year-old self speaks with a bit more assurance and, dare I say it, a little more volume than she did before.”
